Water reservoirs in Valcea municipality (southern Romania) have become swans wintering sites, coming from Scandinavia, the residents being able to enjoy their presence until March.
"The phenomenon has two explanations. Firstly, these beautiful birds come from the Scandinavian Peninsula, Norway, Finland and, as a rule, they were headed to northern Mediterranean. But the climate in Valcea is a mild one and the lakes on Olt river used as reservoirs changed the geography of the water flow, actually turning the river into a system of lakes, so the swans found there an appropriate climate for winter. Even more, Ramnicu Valcea zone close to the Maternity looks exactly like a delta, so there is also enough food for the swans, all these aspects leading to these birds presence there. Besides swans there are also herons, egrets, we are dealing with a micro-delta ecosystem", PhD in Biology Gheorghe Ploaie told AGERPRES.
Besides, on all the reservoirs on river Olt, from springs to the flowing into the Danube, swans can be seen until March.
Not only swans on the river Olt became the point of attraction in Ramnicu Valcea, but several dozens of wild ducks can be admired in the central zone, on Olanesti river. AGERPRES
