The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated on Thursday, on the occasion of celebrating the United Nations Day , Romania's commitment in favor of multilateralist values and principles promoted by the UN Charter.
"After nearly six decades of UN activity, Romania will further remain one of its engaged members and plans to bring a significant contribution to the maintenance of peace and international security, to the promotion of democracy and of human rights and to the achievement of economic and social development targets ", MAE informs in a press release remitted to AGERPRES.
The Diplomacy in Bucharest reminds in the quoted release that, in the recent years, the organization has made progress in important areas of the international agenda : reduction by half compared to 2000, of the extreme poverty, support for transition to the democratic values in many states, as well as the emergence of encouraging signs of economic growth in some developing countries. The effective contribution to the Organization in the field of international peace and security has received recognition and a prestigious confirmation, the organization being conferred this year the Nobel Peace Prize for the prohibition of chemical weapons.
Romania has repeatedly stated its desire to share, in turn , the experience gained in this process. On this basis, Romania is to promote at the current session of the UN General Assembly a resolution focused on " Human rights, democracy and rule of law in the context of the Development Agenda post—2015 " , starting from the broad support received by a resolution on the same topic, adopted on the occasion of the March 2012 session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the quoted source also says.
At the same time, as a member of the Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, it will contribute, in the next period, to defining the reference terms of thematic interest, including for Romania, in accordance with the decisions of the Rio +20 Conference ( Rio de Janeiro, June 2012 ) .
The United Nations Day is celebrated annually on October 24, the global organization and the Member States thus marking the entry into force, in 1945, of the United Nations Charter. The Charter was signed on June 26, 1945 by representatives of 50 states participating in the Conference in San Francisco ( USA) and entered into force on October 24 the same year.
