The Romanian tennis player Simona Helep on Sunday won the Tournament of Champions in Sofia, Bulgaria, a competition which ends the WTA season and which awards prizes amounting to a total 750,000 dollars, after she beat 4-seeded Samantha Stosur of Australia, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the final.
The current best Romanian player, aged 22, the 14th in the WTA rankings and the top-seeded tennis woman of this competition, won the victory after one hour and 37 minutes and managed to get a spectacular end after a weaker start.
Top-seeded Halep won the Serdika Group after victories in two symmetrical sets over Anastasia Pavlyuckenkova (6-3, 6-3), Alize Cornet (6-4, 6-4) and Elina Svitolina (6-1, 6-1) and in the semifinals she defeated second-seeded Ana Ivanovic, from Serbia, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Romanian tennis player, who has won 53 victories in 2013, has also won five tournaments this year, in Nuremberg, ?s-Hertogenbosch, Budapest, New Haven and Moscow after she had lost the finals in Brussels (2012) and Fes (2010, 2011).
